First Day of Summer 2011 Class

Today was the first day of class for the summer. After the keel laying on Sunday, we are excited to get started on the actual building and documenting VIRGINIA. However, there is a great deal of preparation that goes into getting equipment set up, organizing the Freight Shed and painting the new media office.
The day began with a group meeting and Will discussing the projects such as building tool boxes, building the shed that VIRGINIA will be built in, and the actual keel and frames that will be built. Eric then shared some history of the Popham Colony and VIRGINIA and some everyday tasks such as blogging, cleaning and journal writing at the end of each day. Patti shared two important photo and video topics:
1. Only take video if something is moving
2. When taking video or still photography to tell a story, make sure you take close-ups, medium and distant images.
We then began hauling out wood, organizing the shed, and priming the media office. So much work, so little time.
Besides the high school students here today were four volunteers and another shipwright visitor also named Will. Thanks to them for all their help.
Courtney took the pictures for today.
